The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has disclosed that the recently approved increase in corps members’ allowances has not yet been implemented due to delays in the release of funds.

According to PUNCH Online, the Federal Government had approved an increment in the monthly allowance for corps members from N33,000 to N77,000, effective from July 2024.

This increment was officially confirmed in a letter dated 25 September 2024 from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, signed by its Chairman, Ekpo Nta.

Despite the official approval, corps members did not receive the new allowance in September, as the required funds have not been released by the government.

Speaking to BBC Hausa Service on Saturday, Brigadier General Ahmed explained, “The government has not yet released the funds needed for the implementation of the new allowance.” He added that this funding delay is affecting both corps members and NYSC staff, whose salaries were increased months ago but are yet to see the increments.

“Not only corps members, but even our staff members’ salaries were increased about four to five months ago, but this has not yet been implemented.

We are hopeful that the new pay will be implemented soon, though the funds have not yet been released to us,” Ahmed stated.

While no specific date has been provided for when the new allowance will be paid, the NYSC DG expressed optimism, noting that the increase has been in effect since 29 July 2024.
