Rena Wakama, head coach of Nigeria’s D’Tigress, has been honored as the Best Coach in the women’s basketball event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Wakama’s achievement marks a historic milestone for Nigerian female basketball, as she is the first Nigerian coach to secure the women’s Afrobasket title since its inception in 1966.
Under Wakama’s leadership, the Nigerian team reached the quarter-finals of the Olympic tournament for the first time, making them the first African team, men or women, to advance to this stage.
Despite a challenging match, Nigeria concluded their Olympic journey with a 74-88 loss to the United States.
The International Basketball Federation highlighted Wakama’s success in a tweet, stating, “Best coach of #Paris2024 Women’s Basketball, Rena Wakama, Nigeria.”
In addition to Wakama’s accolade, D’Tigress point guard Ezinne Kalu earned a spot on the All-Second Team for the Olympics Women’s Basketball.
Wakama, aged 32, has had a significant impact on Nigerian basketball.
She became the first female Head Coach of D’Tigress in 2023, having previously served as the director of women’s basketball operations and an assistant coach.
Her role involved talent development, academics, and community service, showcasing her commitment to the sport and her team.
