At least 60 bodies have been recovered after a boat carrying over 300 passengers capsized on the Gbajibo River in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. The passengers were en route from Mundi to Gbajibo for the Annual Maulud celebration when the accident occurred.
Abubakar Dakani, the Press Secretary to the Council Chairman of Mokwa Local Government, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that rescue operations are ongoing, and 10 survivors have been found so far.
The Council Chairman, Abdullahi Muregi, acknowledged the recovery of around 60 bodies, with efforts continuing in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency and local volunteers to locate those still missing.
This tragic incident comes just a year after a similar boat accident in September 2023, where over 50 passengers were involved, leading to 24 deaths.
