The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to contractors failing to deliver on projects, threatening to cancel their contracts if performance does not improve.

Wike made the remarks during an inspection of the left-wing service lane of the Outer Southern Expressway, stretching from Ring Road 1 to Wasa, on Friday, September 27.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the progress of the 15-kilometre road project, the minister criticized the contractor, CGC, for delays. According to Wike, the work on the project appeared far behind schedule, with only 50 percent completed, contrary to the company’s claim of 75 percent.

“Last year, you promised the project would be completed by December 2024 or at the latest January 2025, but now you’ve pushed the deadline to May,” Wike said while addressing representatives of the construction company. “With what I’m seeing, it may not be possible until eight or nine months from now.”

The minister further stressed that the government had already disbursed over 80 percent of the contract value, yet the project was not even halfway finished. “We have paid more than 80 percent of this contract, and the job, as far as I am concerned, is not up to 50 percent. I am not going to accept this.”

Wike made it clear that the FCT administration would not tolerate underperformance, emphasizing that public funds must be utilized efficiently. “We don’t have any relationship with non-performing contractors. Everyone knows our position: if you don’t perform, we kick you out.”

The minister’s strong stance reflects his commitment to ensuring that ongoing projects in the FCT are completed on time and meet the required standards.
