President Bola Tinubu has directed the establishment of a Disaster Relief Fund to address the devastating floods that recently struck Maiduguri.
The directive was issued during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday, presided over by the president.
Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, conveyed the president’s decision in a press briefing.
Edun emphasized the importance of a dedicated fund to handle emergencies like the Maiduguri flood, adding that the federal government would collaborate with key stakeholders to mobilize resources for the relief efforts.
The flooding, triggered by the collapse of water channels at the Alau Dam, has displaced many residents and submerged critical infrastructure, including parts of the Shehu of Borno Palace, the Maiduguri Central Market, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
Roads, bridges, and institutions such as the GRA, Maiduguri Zoo, and local colleges also suffered severe damage, causing widespread disruption across the city.
