Nigerian and Super Falcons forward Jennifer Echegini experienced a difficult return to Turin as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) fell to a 3-1 defeat against Juventus Women in the second round of the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) playoffs.

In a thrilling encounter held at the Pozzo-La Marmora Stadium in Biella, Italy, on Wednesday, Juventus delivered an impressive performance to secure a vital first-leg advantage. Amalie Vangsgaard opened the scoring early for the Italian side, assisted by Sofia Cantore. PSG quickly responded through Thiniba Samoura, but Cantore restored Juventus’ lead with a brilliant solo goal just before halftime.

Juventus sealed the win in the second half when Hanna Bennison scored, once again assisted by the in-form Cantore, to make it 3-1. The result gives the Bianconeri a significant edge heading into the second leg in Paris on September 26.

For Echegini, who recently completed a high-profile transfer to PSG, the match marked a harsh reality check. The 23-year-old midfielder returned to face her former team after a successful stint at Juventus earlier this year, where she scored 10 goals and provided an assist in 16 appearances. Her impressive performances earned her a spot in the Championship Team of the Year and the title of Juventus’ best young player before her move to the French giants.

Despite her individual success, Echegini and her PSG teammates now face a daunting task in the return leg as they look to overturn the deficit and keep their UWCL hopes alive.

The defeat highlights the challenges of transitioning to a new team in top-level women’s football, as Echegini continues to navigate her role in a highly competitive PSG squad. All eyes will be on how she and her team respond in the crucial second leg in Paris.
