The Nigeria Police Force has cautioned Nigerians against carrying out retaliatory attacks on South African nationals, businesses, diplomatic facilities, or other interests in the country following reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over the reported incidents and fears that rising tensions could trigger reprisals within Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Force said security and intelligence agencies had reviewed the situation during a Joint Intelligence Board meeting held on May 18, 2026, under the chairmanship of the National Security Adviser.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, the Federal Government is engaging relevant authorities and stakeholders through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to ensure a peaceful resolution and protect the interests of Nigerians both at home and abroad.
While acknowledging public outrage over the reported attacks, the police urged citizens not to resort to self-help or take the law into their own hands.
The Force warned that reprisals, violence, intimidation, destruction of property, hate speech, or any action capable of threatening public peace and national security remain unlawful and would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The statement emphasised that Nigeria remains a nation governed by the rule of law and that all persons legally residing within its borders, irrespective of nationality, are entitled to protection under the law.
It further stressed that any attempt to target South African nationals, diplomatic missions, businesses, or other lawful interests in Nigeria would be considered a criminal offence and treated accordingly.
The police also advised members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified, inflammatory, or inciting information, particularly on social media, warning that such content could escalate tensions and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
“To forestall any breakdown of law and order, the Nigeria Police Force, working in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies, has strengthened security measures and increased surveillance around critical national assets, foreign missions, and other strategic locations across the country,” the statement said.
The Force added that adequate security deployments had been made to safeguard lives and property.
Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining peace and public safety, the police assured Nigerians that it remains dedicated to protecting lives and property, preserving public order, and safeguarding national security.
It urged citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding while continuing their lawful activities without fear.
