Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and ex-Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The two prominent political figures were formally received into the party on Sunday, where they were presented with membership cards following a closed-door meeting with NDC leaders.
They were welcomed by former Bayelsa State Governor and NDC National Leader, Seriake Dickson, who described the party as stable and rapidly growing.
Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and Kwankwaso, his counterpart in the New Nigeria People’s Party, defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before making the move.
Their defection comes amid ongoing political realignments as opposition figures reposition ahead of the next general elections.
Speaking after the event, both leaders urged Nigerians to support the NDC and participate in its activities. Kwankwaso called on citizens to register with the party, while Obi emphasized the need for a united and stable political platform focused on national development.
The development is widely seen as a strategic alliance that could reshape opposition politics and influence the 2027 electoral contest.
