Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has underscored the National Youth Games’ vital role in revitalizing Nigeria’s sports industry, calling it a beacon of hope.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 8th edition of the Games, held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, Enoh highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent to strengthen Nigeria’s global sports presence.

Addressing an audience of young athletes and officials from across the country, the Minister emphasized that grassroots sports development is critical to shaping future champions and promoting national unity.

He reiterated its pivotal role in building a strong sports sector, noting that the Games are essential for talent identification and long-term athlete development.

“In today’s world, sports are crucial for creating wealth, promoting peace, fostering national unity, and facilitating international diplomacy.

This is why the current administration, under the leadership of His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), is dedicated to repositioning the sector for optimal performance, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Enoh stated.

Reflecting on the lessons from the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Enoh called for an enhanced focus on grassroots development.

He stressed the need for a framework that not only identifies talent but also ensures comprehensive nurturing from the grassroots to elite competition levels.

The Minister also lauded Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for his steadfast support of grassroots sports, particularly in hosting such a significant national event during challenging times.

This edition of the National Youth Games is set to be historic, with a record-breaking 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials participating.

Enoh expressed gratitude to the Governors of participating states and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for their support and sponsorship of their respective delegations.

He urged athletes and officials to embrace fair play, compete cleanly, and adhere to the rules, adding, “This year’s National Youth Games presents another opportunity to initiate the process of developing athletes for the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions and for setting new world records.”
