President Bola Tinubu has called for the swift evacuation of residents from flood-ravaged communities in Maiduguri, Borno State, following severe flooding that has displaced thousands.

Expressing deep concern, Tinubu directed relevant federal agencies to accelerate rescue operations and provide immediate assistance to those affected.

“While the relevant authorities are still assessing the damage caused by the flood, the President calls for the immediate evacuation of people from the affected areas,” read a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.

The statement, titled ‘President Tinubu Expresses Concern over Maiduguri Flood, Pledges Federal Support,’ highlights the gravity of the disaster.

Borno State, located in Nigeria’s northeast, is currently facing one of its worst floods in decades, which has submerged homes and displaced entire communities.

Key public facilities, including a post office, the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and even a cemetery and zoo, have been severely affected, with wild animals fleeing for safety.

Onanuga conveyed Tinubu’s deep sympathies to the people of Borno and especially to those who have lost their livelihoods due to the flooding, which was triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam.

“President Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the state, especially to the families that have lost their means of livelihood due to the disaster,” Onanuga said.

The President also assured Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum of the Federal Government’s commitment to work closely with the state to address immediate humanitarian needs.

“He has ordered the National Emergency Management Agency to assist the flood victims,” Onanuga added.

Tinubu remains dedicated to mobilizing federal resources to provide long-term support to the affected communities during this challenging period.
