Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has pledged to resign if President Bola Tinubu fails to carry Edo State in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking in a widely shared video, the governor said: “There is no opposition here in Edo; everybody is for Asiwaju in this state. Tinubu is more popular than me in Edo state. If he doesn’t win the presidential election in Edo in 2027, I will resign.”
Okpebholo’s declaration comes amid earlier promises that the state would deliver overwhelming support for Tinubu — including a vow to deliver 2.5 million votes in his favour in 2027.
The governor has framed this pledge as both a vote of confidence in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and as a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to Tinubu’s re-election bid, arguing that his own political fate is bound to the success of the party in Edo State.
Observers see the vow as a high-stakes political gamble — one that raises questions about the sincerity of the commitment and the practical and legal feasibility of a resignation, given the constitutional and political implications.
