The Kwara State Government has directed an immediate shutdown of schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti Local Government Areas, citing escalating security threats across the region.
According to a circular released by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State branch and signed by Chairman Yusuf Agboola, the decision was taken following a government directive over “renewed security threats.”
“This decision was occasioned by the security challenges ravaging the area and the efforts of the government to control the situation,” the circular read.
Authorities note that boarding schools in Irepodun are particularly vulnerable and included them in the closure order.
The closure follows a deadly attack on Tuesday night in Eruku, Ekiti LGA, where gunmen stormed a church, killed three worshippers, and abducted over 35 people — a strike that has intensified concerns about the safety of students.
In response to the attack, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited the community and proposed establishing a Forward Operating Base for the Nigerian Army and a Mobile Police Squadron in the area.
The school shutdown will remain in effect “until further notice,” according to the circular, while the government awaits “security clearance for normal activities to resume.”
This shutdown also comes against a broader backdrop of rising insecurity in the state. In October 2025, Governor AbdulRazaq announced the closure of 45 public schools due to recurrent bandit attacks, relocating teachers and reinforcing security in safer communities.
