Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, are set to begin their qualification campaign for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a highly anticipated match against Benin.
This fixture marks the second meeting between the two West African teams within four months, following their previous clash during the World Cup qualifiers in June.
In the June encounter, Benin’s Cheetahs secured a 2-1 victory over Nigeria. The Super Eagles initially took the lead with a goal by Raphael Onyedika, just before the 30-minute mark.
However, Benin quickly responded, with Jodel Dossou scoring the equalizer 10 minutes later. Steve Mounie delivered the winning goal for Benin during first-half stoppage time.
This defeat had significant repercussions for Nigeria’s team, leading to the demotion and eventual resignation of head coach Finidi George.
Following a turbulent period in the coaching department, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) initially appointed German coach Bruno Labbadia. However, after negotiations fell through, Augustine Eguavoen was brought back as the interim coach, marking his third stint in charge.
The upcoming AFCON qualifier will be the eighth encounter between Nigeria and Benin.
Nigeria has historically dominated this fixture, winning six out of their previous seven matches.
However, Benin, now coached by former Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr, will look to build on their recent success against the Super Eagles.
In terms of team news, Nigeria will benefit from the return of key players such as Victor Osimhen and William Troost-Ekong, both of whom missed the June World Cup qualifiers due to injuries.
Their presence is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s efforts as they seek revenge against Benin and aim for a strong start in their road to AFCON 2025.
Although there is no official broadcast confirmation for the match, fans are encouraged to follow the Nigeria Football Federation’s social media platforms for live updates and coverage.
