Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered another setback after a dramatic 1-1 draw with South Africa, highlighted by a contentious goal from defender Calvin Bassey.

The encounter began with a nervy opening 15 minutes, during which Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, was called into action to deny the hosts — looking far more assured than in his previous outing.

However, the Super Eagles failed to capitalise on that reprieve, and South Africa broke the deadlock following a calamitous own goal from Nigeria’s captain, William Troost-Ekong.

As half-time approached, Nigeria levelled the score through an unexpected source. Bassey, who had never scored for the Super Eagles, bundled the ball into the net to make it 1-1. The goal, however, sparked controversy as replays suggested the ball struck his hand before crossing the line.

With no VAR available in the stadium, the referee allowed the equaliser to stand, leaving South Africa’s players and fans visibly frustrated.
