The Osun State Government is urging residents to undergo HIV/AIDS screening, emphasizing that the disease is no longer a death sentence if detected early and managed properly.
At a distribution event for HIV/AIDS prevention tools in Osogbo on Tuesday, the state Commissioner for Health, Barr. Jola Akintola, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Isiaka Adekunle, outlined the government’s commitment to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030.
This aligns with global health targets.
“The disease is no longer a death sentence when detected early and managed with regular treatment,” Akintola said.
“The state is actively involved in this effort, ensuring that we reach our 2030 goal.
We are not relying solely on our partners; the government is also taking proactive measures.”
Akintola appealed to residents to get tested, stressing that with current treatments, HIV/AIDS is manageable and preventable.
“There are effective drugs available, and our goal is to put every affected individual on treatment to significantly reduce transmission,” he added.
Olusegun Daramola, Executive Secretary of the Osun State Agency for the Control of AIDS (OSACA), praised Governor Ademola Adeleke for his dedication to quality care.
He highlighted that the distribution of prevention tools would improve screening capabilities and make a significant impact.
“Preventing the spread of HIV is a collective responsibility, starting with thorough screening and timely treatment,” Daramola said.
