Three members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers—Hon. Ajilesoro Taofeek Abimbola and Hon. Omirin Olusanya, both from Osun State, as well as Hon. Marcus Onobu from Edo State—announced their defections in separate letters addressed to the House and read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during plenary.
In their letters, the lawmakers attributed their decision to ongoing internal crises and unresolved divisions within the PDP, adding that they were motivated by a desire to support President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in repositioning Nigeria’s economy.
Their defection was witnessed on the House floor by APC National Secretary, Senator Suraj Ajibola—also from Osun State—who was accompanied by other party officials.
Reacting to the development, Minority Leader Hon. Kingsley Chinda called on Speaker Abbas to enforce constitutional provisions by declaring the seats of the defectors vacant.
However, Speaker Abbas, who presided over the session, simply responded, “Your point of order is noted,” offering no further comment on the matter.
