The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has donated 35 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered hybrid buses to the Presidential Initiative on CNG as part of efforts to support the Federal Government’s push for cleaner energy.
At a handover ceremony held on Monday at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Mr. Bashir Ojulari, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to driving Nigeria’s transition to gas-powered mobility.
“This move aligns with NNPC Ltd’s efforts to promote the adoption of CNG as a cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable fuel alternative,” Ojulari said. “I am proud that NNPC Ltd is playing a pivotal role in driving the Federal Government’s gas agenda towards energy transition,” he added in a statement issued by the company.
Ojulari also highlighted the company’s ongoing achievements in gas infrastructure, supply, distribution, and the expansion of retail outlets across the country.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the donated buses as more than just a fleet — calling them “instruments of economic relief, social equity, and environmental responsibility.”
“They signal a future where the ordinary Nigerian can commute safely, affordably, and efficiently,” he said.
Ekpo also noted that the CNG initiative reflects President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at cutting transportation costs, reducing dependency on petrol, and harnessing Nigeria’s abundant natural gas for national development.
Also speaking, NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mr. Mumuni Dagazau, emphasized the economic value of switching to CNG, saying it would reduce the nation’s reliance on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), lead to significant cost savings, and bolster the local gas sector.
On her part, Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, said the initiative demonstrates NNPC Ltd’s commitment to “advancing and shaping a new energy future that will purposefully serve people, communities, and the planet.”
Programme Coordinator and CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, expressed appreciation to NNPC Ltd for its unwavering support.
“NNPC Ltd has been a reliable partner of the Initiative since its inception,” he stated.
