Prominent Kano businessman, philanthropist, and patriarch of the renowned Dantata family, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, has passed away at the age of 94.
His death was confirmed on Saturday by his Private Secretary, Mustapha Abdullahi-Junaid, who announced the news in a heartfelt statement.
“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved father, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus and forgive his shortcomings. Details of the Janazah will be shared later, in sha Allah,” Junaid said.
Born on May 19, 1931, the late Dantata was a towering figure in Nigerian commerce, Islamic scholarship, and philanthropy. As a direct descendant of the legendary merchant Alhassan Dantata—one of West Africa’s wealthiest businessmen in the early 20th century—he expanded the family’s business empire beyond its original trading roots.
Over several decades, he diversified into multiple sectors including construction, manufacturing, banking, agriculture, real estate, petroleum, and oil and gas. His leadership helped shape the trajectory of Northern Nigeria’s private sector and economy at large.
In addition to his business acumen, Dantata was deeply respected for his modesty, religious devotion, and commitment to societal development. Through his charitable foundation and personal initiatives, he funded the construction and operation of numerous schools, mosques, health centres, orphanages, and social welfare programmes.
He also played an active role in public service, serving in the Kano State Government and contributing to Nigeria’s political evolution as a member of the Constitution Drafting Committee that prepared the 1979 Constitution.
While there were varying reports regarding the location of his death, multiple sources confirmed he died on Friday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, at a hospital. Other accounts suggested Abuja, but these remain unverified.
The family has said that further details regarding his funeral (Janazah) will be communicated in due course.
