The Federal Government on Thursday inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee for the 2025 Democracy Day Celebration, tasking its members with delivering a befitting and memorable event.
The inauguration ceremony, held in Abuja, was presided over by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who was represented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu.
Speaking at the event, Akume emphasized the significance of the celebration in honouring Nigeria’s founding fathers and democratic icons who played pivotal roles in shaping the nation’s democratic journey.
“This year’s Democracy Day is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of our founding fathers to attain independence, and the efforts of democratic champions to end military rule,” he said.
“Celebrating this day is a way of recognising their place in our history.”
The SGF noted that the annual commemoration also provides a platform for the government to showcase its achievements and present its performance scorecard to the citizens.
He urged committee members to collaborate effectively in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ensuring that the 2025 celebration leaves a lasting impression.
According to Akume, the committee’s responsibilities include planning and executing all approved Democracy Day activities, co-opting relevant individuals or organizations where necessary, documenting events for historical reference, and undertaking any related assignments to ensure the success of the celebration.
