Two fatal accidents, on the Ogun State axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Sagamu–Ikorodu road, In less than six hours, claimed 18 lives and left several others injured, including a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer.

The first incident, which occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, involved a crash between three vehicles, killing seven and injuring four.

Later that same day, a second deadly accident occurred on the Sagamu–Ikorodu road, where 18 people were killed, including an FRSC officer.

Four others were also injured.

The FRSC Chief Route Commander and Public Education Officer for Ogun State, Florence Okpe, confirmed the incidents in a statement on behalf of Sector Commander Fasakin Akinwumi.

According to Okpe, the tragedy on the Sagamu–Ikorodu road escalated when a vehicle, having lost its brakes, crashed into FRSC officials conducting a rescue operation at the scene, resulting in the death of one of the officers.

The injured victims were immediately taken to Dasochris Hospital in Gbaga, while the bodies of the deceased were transferred to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Sagamu.

Okpe detailed the crash, stating, “FRSC Mosimi Unit Command carried out a rescue operation on the Ikorodu–Sagamu road after a crash on Saturday, April 5, at approximately 4:00 PM.

The crash involved seven vehicles with the following registration numbers: AGL752YC (Toyota Hiace bus), T14007LA (Daf truck), HT680 (Honda car), an unmarked Daf truck, STF10204 (pickup), AGG448Q (motorbike), and PKA214WS (Bajaj bike).”

“A total of 22 people were involved in the crash—14 men, 6 women, and one child.

Four people were injured, while 18 were killed, including one FRSC officer who was part of the rescue team.

The crash occurred when two vehicles collided, and while the rescue operation was underway, another vehicle with brake failure crashed into the team, killing the FRSC officer,” Okpe said.

The Sector Commander expressed deep sorrow over the series of accidents, attributing the tragedies to reckless driving, excessive speed, and brake failure.

He urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and follow road signs for their safety.

“Motorists are advised to drive within the stipulated speed limits and observe road signs as well,” Okpe added.
