OPay, a leading financial institution, has expanded its N1.2 billion 10-year scholarship initiative to students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, reinforcing its commitment to education and youth empowerment in Nigeria.

This expansion makes OAU the third beneficiary of the prestigious program, which aims to ease financial burdens and promote academic excellence among tertiary institution students. By offering financial support, the scholarship enables students to focus on their studies and personal development without economic constraints.

Speaking on the initiative, OPay’s Chief Public Affairs Officer, Justin Zhang, emphasized the critical role of education in national development and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting students across the country.

“Obafemi Awolowo University has a legacy of producing some of the nation’s brightest minds, and we are proud to support these future leaders as part of our broader commitment to education and empowerment,” Zhang stated.

Professor O.M.A Daramola, OAU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), acknowledged the impact of the scholarship, noting its significance in complementing the university’s efforts to support students.

“The university has long been committed to supporting indigenous students, but our efforts can only go so far. This generous donation from OPay marks a significant milestone, going beyond what the alumni have been able to achieve over the years. It provides a crucial safety net, ensuring that students can focus on their education rather than worrying about basic survival. This contribution will have a lasting impact, empowering students to pursue their academic goals with confidence and stability,” Daramola stated.

For students like Omoboriowo Damilola Isaac, a 600-level student in the Clinical Sciences Department, the scholarship is a game-changer.

“As a student in the Department of Clinical Sciences with the highest tuition fees at OAU, receiving this scholarship will be a tremendous relief. It will significantly ease the financial burden on my family, allowing me to focus on my studies. This support ensures that I can complete my degree and pursue my academic goals with full confidence,” Isaac said.

Beyond financial relief, the initiative represents a beacon of hope for students, their families, and their communities. OPay’s commitment to education continues to expand, following the successful implementation of the scholarship program in two other renowned universities last year.

While OAU is the latest beneficiary, OPay has assured Nigerians that its vision extends to other tertiary institutions nationwide. The initiative underscores the company’s belief that education is a powerful tool for progress and inclusivity.

As the program grows, students from diverse regions in Nigeria can anticipate the opportunity to benefit, reaffirming OPay’s dedication to unlocking potential and creating a brighter future for the nation’s youth.
