Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that some ministers in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet secured their positions by paying for them.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa Service, El-Rufai detailed his reasons for leaving the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He noted that he would have preferred being expelled from the APC rather than constantly having to explain why he left.
“It could have been easier for me if APC sacked me because they would save me from explaining the stress of why I left the party,” he stated.
El-Rufai accused the APC of straying from its founding principles, prioritizing personal interests over the collective good.
Responding to claims that he left the party because he was not rewarded with a ministerial appointment despite his contributions during the presidential campaign, he dismissed the notion.
“Did I seek to be minister? I know people who paid to get ministerial appointments,” he said.
He further criticized the APC government, stating, “The APC abandoned the ideals that led to its formation. It has abandoned the people. Everyone is now pursuing personal interests and wealth. The government has become a business enterprise where everything has a price.”
