The Assistant Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, Mr. Amadein Tibiebi, has been arrested for allegedly possessing an illegal firearm.
Tibiebi, a former militant and self-styled general, is currently being interrogated by the police under the Bayelsa State Command.
According to sources close to the investigation, Tibiebi’s arrest is connected to a previous incident in November 2021, when one Richard Okon was detained for illegal firearms possession at a wake-keeping ceremony in the Koluama community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
During his confession, Okon claimed that he was working with Tibiebi Woinemi Amadein and that the gun belonged to Tibiebi.
Following the 2021 incident, Tibiebi was initially questioned by the police but was released after presenting firearm licenses and documents, which were later alleged to be fake.
His release at the time was reportedly influenced by his connections with prominent figures in the state.
However, a recent petition prompted the police to revisit the case, leading to Tibiebi’s current arrest.
He is now being interrogated on charges of illegal firearm possession and forgery of a firearm license.
A source at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Tibiebi is under investigation for illegal possession of firearms, using a fake license, and forgery.
The source emphasized the seriousness of the charges, stating, “This is a serious offense under the law, and we are thoroughly investigating it to ensure that the offender is punished according to the law.”
When reached for comment, PDP spokesperson in Bayelsa State, Mr. Ebiye Ogoli, said he had yet to receive detailed information about the arrest.
“I’m yet to get the details; I’m also hearing it as a rumor,” Ogoli said. “I have not confirmed it yet.
Somebody called my attention to it last night, but I have not confirmed it, so I cannot categorically tell you that he has been arrested or the reasons for his arrest.
I will do my findings later in the day.”
Similarly, CSP Gunn Ewhoborwo, spokesman for Zone 16 of the Nigerian Police Force, and ASP Musa Muhammed, spokesman for the Bayelsa State Command, both indicated that they had not yet been briefed on the arrest and promised to provide further information once available.
