Barely a week after a devastating fuel tanker explosion in Dikko, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State claimed over 100 lives and injured 69 others, another tragic incident has occurred in the state.
An explosion rocked a mining site in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area, early Sunday morning, sparking widespread panic.
The blast reportedly took place as miners were resuming work for the day, sending shockwaves through Sabon Pegi and neighboring villages, including New Bussa in Borgu Local Government Area.
Residents fled into the surrounding bush in fear, with some initially suspecting the loud explosion came from the nearby hydroelectricity dam.
Preliminary reports suggest the explosion may have been caused by the mishandling of explosive devices used in mining operations at the site.
According to a community source, four bodies have been recovered so far, but the number of casualties is believed to be higher.
The source described the incident as unprecedented in the area, emphasizing that the community remains on edge.
Many villagers are hesitant to approach the site, unsure of the cause of the explosion or the possibility of further danger.
Although Niger State has a history of terrorist activity, the source ruled out any connection to terrorism in this case.
The explosion is believed to be an accident stemming from ongoing mining operations in Sabon Pegi, a location known for its active mining industry.
Despite the magnitude of the incident, neither the state government nor the state police command has issued an official statement at the time of this report.
Investigations are expected to shed more light on the cause and the extent of the tragedy.
This latest explosion underscores growing concerns about safety and the handling of explosive materials in the region’s mining sector.
