The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted claims of a national grid collapse following Saturday’s power outage, describing the reports as inaccurate.

In a statement released in Abuja, the General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, explained that the outage was due to the tripping of transmission lines, not a collapse of the entire grid.

According to the statement, the Osogbo-Ihovour line tripped at about 1:41 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the Benin-Omotosho line. These incidents disrupted bulk power supply specifically to the Lagos area.

Before the tripping incidents, the total power generation on the grid stood at 4,335.63 megawatts.

Following the disruptions, generation dropped to 2,573.23 megawatts, which TCN said was clear evidence that the grid remained operational.

The affected transmission lines impacted power plants, including Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras. While most facilities have since been restored, work is ongoing to fully restore the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line.

TCN reassured Nigerians of its commitment to building a more resilient transmission grid despite existing challenges. It also cautioned against spreading misinformation, urging the public to rely on verified facts regarding power supply issues.
