The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that 15 people were killed and more than 500 households displaced following coordinated attacks by the Lakurawa terrorist group on three communities in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

In a statement issued on Friday, NEMA revealed that the fatalities and displacements were the result of attacks launched on Wednesday around 2:05 p.m., targeting the villages of Kwalajiya, Talba, and Fasnaki.

The disclosure followed a joint assessment visit to the affected areas by officials of NEMA and the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

According to the agency, the attackers struck while most residents were on their farms. Eyewitnesses recounted how the assailants looted shops and torched homes, food barns, and small businesses.

“The attack claimed the lives of 15 individuals, forcing residents to flee for safety,” NEMA stated. “Many have taken refuge at Sardaunan Tangaza Model School in Tangaza town, while others are sheltering in Ayama, a nearby settlement on the outskirts of the town.”

NEMA further noted that over 500 households were directly affected, with many people abandoning their homes and farmlands to avoid further violence.

While the agency did not confirm whether aid had been delivered, it assured that it is working in coordination with Sokoto State authorities to assess the full extent of the damage and identify urgent humanitarian needs.
