Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed deep concern over the possibility that some imprisoned Boko Haram leaders may have escaped during the recent flood disaster that hit Maiduguri, the state capital.
The flooding, which caused significant damage to the city, also affected part of the old correctional facility, prompting the evacuation of numerous inmates to the new maximum-security prison in Maiduguri. According to security sources, there are unverified reports that some of the inmates managed to escape during the evacuation process.
When asked in a BBC interview if he was worried about the potential escape of Boko Haram leaders, Governor Zulum confirmed his concern. “I’m worried, yes, I’m seriously worried,” he said. The governor also highlighted the state’s ongoing rehabilitation efforts, noting that over 200,000 Boko Haram members and their families had repented under the Borno Model of Rehabilitation over the last two years, which he believes has contributed to restoring peace and stability in the state.
Zulum further lamented the timing of the flooding, which comes as the state is still grappling with the aftermath of the insurgency. “Borno State has witnessed unimaginable devastation—over 300,000 people killed, thousands of classrooms and facilities destroyed,” he said.
The governor acknowledged the challenges in providing adequate relief for flood victims, stating that while aid had been provided, it was insufficient. “We cannot provide food for millions in just a few hours. Our plan now is to relocate victims to camps where support can be distributed more effectively,” Zulum explained.
