Former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has responded to an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as confirmed by his media office on Wednesday.

According to a statement issued by Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, Bello’s decision to appear before the anti-graft agency followed consultations with his family, legal team, and political associates.

The statement, titled Former Governor Yahaya Bello Honours EFCC’s Invitation, emphasized Bello’s willingness to engage with the EFCC.

Accompanied by several high profile individuals, Bello arrived at the EFCC headquarters to address the allegations against him.

The former governor has been embroiled in a dispute with the agency over alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as Kogi State’s leader.

He, along with three others, is facing 19 counts related to money laundering totaling N80.2 billion.

The statement highlighted Bello’s proactive approach to clear his name, quoting him as saying he has “nothing to hide and nothing to fear.”

It also mentioned his previous legal efforts to ensure due process in the ongoing investigation.

“The case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello had been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing.

It is important for the former governor to now honour the invitation of the EFCC to clear his name as he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear,” the statement read.

It added that Bello supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in its fight against corruption and efforts to place Nigeria on a path to sustainable economic development.

As of the time of this report, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale was unavailable for comment.

Earlier in April, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede had committed to ensuring the prosecution of Mr. Bello, even vowing to resign if the former governor was not brought to justice.

He also pledged that those who obstructed Bello’s arrest would face legal consequences.
