Sunshine Stars’ long-serving captain, Sunday Abe, has officially retired from professional football after an illustrious 18-year career.

The 33-year-old defender announced his retirement on Wednesday in Akure, reflecting on his journey and expressing gratitude for the experiences gained throughout his career. Abe spent most of his career leading his boyhood club, Sunshine Stars FC, and also had a stint with Albania’s Teuta Durres FC.

Abe’s career was not limited to club football; he also represented Nigeria on the international stage. He participated in the U-17 AFCON and World Cup qualifiers and played in the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt.

He later progressed to the national U-23 team and was invited to join the Home-Based Super Eagles in 2010.

Although Abe is stepping away from playing, he remains committed to the sport.

He has already earned two coaching certificates and is preparing for roles in football management and administration, aiming to contribute off the field.

Abe’s football journey began with the Ondo State Football Development Committee, leading to his promotion to Sunshine Stars’ first team in 2006.

His leadership qualities were recognized in 2013 when he was named captain, a position he held for 17 seasons in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

His final game for Sunshine Stars was on June 19, in a 1-0 victory over Doma United, a crucial win that ensured the club’s safety in the Nigerian top flight.
