Ruud van Nistelrooy, former Manchester United player and interim manager, is reportedly eyeing a return to one of his previous clubs as he seeks his next managerial role. This comes shortly after Ruben Amorim opted not to retain him on Manchester United’s coaching staff following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal.
Van Nistelrooy, who took charge on an interim basis after Ten Hag’s exit, enjoyed a successful spell, guiding United to three wins and a draw in his four matches, including a commendable result against Chelsea. Despite this, he was not included in Amorim’s revamped coaching setup.
According to Sky Germany, Van Nistelrooy is now being linked with the managerial vacancy at Hamburg, a club he briefly played for during the 2010-2011 season. In his time at Hamburg, the Dutch striker scored 17 goals in 44 appearances. The club recently parted ways with manager Steffen Baumgart after a 2-2 draw with Schalke, leaving Hamburg in eighth place in the 2. Bundesliga standings.
Van Nistelrooy’s previous connection with the club and his growing managerial reputation make him a strong contender for the role. Before his stint at Manchester United, Van Nistelrooy managed PSV Eindhoven and was reportedly a strong candidate for the HSV job earlier this year, before Hamburg ultimately appointed Baumgart in February.
Sky Germany also noted that the Dutchman had brief discussions with former HSV sporting director Jonas Boldt at the time and had visited the club in December 2014 as part of his coaching development.
In the wake of his departure from Manchester United, Van Nistelrooy posted a heartfelt message on social media, thanking the club’s staff, players, and fans for their support during his time with the team.
“To everyone at Manchester United Football Club, in particular the backroom staff, the players, and the fans, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible efforts and support,” Van Nistelrooy wrote.
“It has been a privilege and honour to represent the club as a player, coach, and manager, and I will always cherish the memories we have shared together. Man United will always have a special place in my heart, and I hope there are many more glory days at Old Trafford very soon—not only because I want the club to do well, but because you all deserve it! All the best and take care, Ruud.”
