In July 2024, President Bola Tinubu approved an increase in the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000. While implementation has been gradual, several states have committed to paying above the mandated amount. Below is a list of states that have announced plans to pay higher than N70,000:
Rivers State: On October 18, 2024, Governor Siminalayi Fubara approved a new minimum wage of N85,000 for state civil servants.
Ogun State: Governor Dapo Abiodun approved a minimum wage of N77,000 on October 15, 2024, as announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi.
Gombe State: On October 14, 2024, the state government, in partnership with the Nigeria Labour Congress, agreed to raise the minimum wage to N71,451.15.
Ondo State: Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa announced an increase to N73,000 on October 12, 2024, during his campaign kickoff ahead of the November 16 governorship election.
Kogi State: Governor Usman Ododo approved N72,500 as the new minimum wage for civil servants, effective immediately. The tax on the increased wage has been suspended for one year.
States Implementing N70,000 Minimum Wage:
Several states have pledged to meet the N70,000 minimum wage, including:
Anambra: Governor Chukwuma Soludo announced that payment would commence in October 2024.
Katsina: Governor Dikko Radda confirmed his administration’s commitment to the new wage.
Ebonyi: Governor Francis Nwifuru approved N70,000 for state civil servants in September 2024.
Adamawa: Governor Ahmadu Fintiri approved the new wage for state and local government workers in August 2024.
Oyo: Governor Seyi Makinde has promised to implement the new wage after addressing consequential salary adjustments.
Borno: Governor Babagana Zulum confirmed that payment would start in October 2024.
Osun and Benue have also expressed readiness to implement the N70,000 minimum wage.
States Yet to Implement: States such as Jigawa, Zamfara, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa have not yet announced plans to implement the new minimum wage.
