The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has denied reports claiming that a recent inter-gang clash on campus resulted in student deaths.
In a statement on Monday, UNIPORT spokesman Dr. Sam Kpenu clarified that the incident, which had been circulated in an online video, was misreported. According to Kpenu, the altercation was a fight between students and not a cult-related clash, as some media outlets suggested.
“We are aware of inaccurate reports suggesting that students died during an incident on campus. However, no student was killed or injured. It was merely a fight, and the situation was quickly contained by the university’s security unit and the police,” Kpenu stated.
He added that those involved in the altercation have been apprehended and are currently in police custody for interrogation. Kpenu emphasized that the university maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards cultism, bullying, and violent behavior, and remains committed to upholding a safe environment.
The spokesman assured that academic activities are proceeding as usual and urged the public to avoid spreading false information.
