Olympique Lyonnais has been conditionally cleared by UEFA to participate in the 2024/25 Europa League, despite ongoing uncertainty over the club’s relegation to Ligue 2.
The French side, which finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season and secured a Europa League berth, now faces a critical hurdle after the French football financial watchdog, DNCG, ordered their demotion over financial irregularities.
The decision has sparked widespread debate and concern within the French football community.
In an official statement released on Friday, June 27, Lyon confirmed that UEFA has granted them provisional approval to join next season’s Europa League, on the condition that their appeal against the DNCG ruling is successful.
The club revealed that it has complied with UEFA’s financial regulations and signed an agreement with the Club Financial Control Body, satisfying the European football governing body’s requirements for participation.
Lyon also acknowledged the role of UEFA officials in supporting the club’s case and reiterated its commitment to securing a favourable outcome in the ongoing appeal, which is key to retaining both their top-flight and European status.
