The United States has extended support to victims of the devastating floods in Borno State, which have caused significant loss of life, property damage, and displacement in Maiduguri and its surrounding areas.
In a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the U.S. government expressed condolences to the victims and their families. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is actively involved in providing relief through various partnerships, including the United Nations (UN) and other implementing agencies.
According to the statement, USAID, in collaboration with the World Food Program (WFP), has been distributing hot meal rations to over 67,000 displaced individuals across four camps. In addition, emergency nutritional aid is being provided to pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children under five.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is using $3 million in USAID funding to address immediate flood-related needs, while the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) is conducting food airlifts to inaccessible flood-hit areas in Maiduguri.
USAID has also repurposed funds through its partner NGOs to deliver critical assistance in Maiduguri and the neighboring Jere Local Government Area. The U.S. government praised the resilience of Borno’s people and commended the efforts of first responders and aid workers providing essential services on the ground.
