The Edo State chapter of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the recovery of two bodies and the rescue of six passengers after a bus plunged into the Ovia River along the Benin-Lagos highway.
The tragic accident occurred on Thursday evening, with the bus reportedly en route from Lagos to Port Harcourt when it veered off the road and plunged into the river. Edo FRSC Sector Commander, Cyril Mathew, confirmed that rescue efforts began immediately after the incident.
“Six people were rescued alive, one body was recovered yesterday, and another today,” Mathew said. Despite the ongoing efforts, several passengers remain trapped in the river.
Mathew also acknowledged the slim chances of survival for those still submerged, stating that the FRSC has enlisted the help of local divers to assist in the recovery mission. However, negotiations with the divers are still in progress, as they have requested N2 million to proceed with the operation.
The FRSC’s rescue mission, which commenced on Thursday, continued through Friday, as authorities work to recover the remaining victims.
