Two individuals were confirmed dead on Sunday following a violent altercation between an army officer and a police special constabulary at Agyaragu Market in Obi Local Government Area.

According to DSP Ramhan Nansel, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, the incident occurred around 12:30 PM during an investigation into a reported motorcycle theft.

The police statement revealed that a suspect was arrested by a police operative, assisted by a special constabulary from Jenkwe Division, at Agyaragu Market. However, while transporting the suspect to the station, a soldier, who was reportedly serving in Borno State and on home leave, intervened to obstruct the arrest.

“The soldier, whose identity was not disclosed, drew a knife and stabbed the Police Special Constabulary,” the statement noted.

In the ensuing scuffle, the police overpowered the soldier and used the knife against him in self-defense. Both men sustained injuries, and the soldier was later declared dead.

Following the incident, a group of youths reportedly mobilized and attacked the police station, setting it on fire. Police responded to the assault, resulting in injuries to three attackers, one of whom was later confirmed dead.

“Upon receipt of the information, the Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Nadada, promptly visited the scene with military personnel from Operation Whirl Stroke, the 177 Guards Battalion, and the 22 Quick Response Unit. He directed the deployment of the Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorist Unit, and tactical units to restore order,” the statement added.

The statement further indicated that peace has been restored, and an investigation is underway, with the Commissioner ordering a manhunt for those involved.
