President-elect Donald Trump announced Kash Patel, a loyal ally and former Pentagon official, as his choice to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The announcement was made Saturday on Trump’s Truth Social platform, signaling a potential leadership shake-up within the bureau.
“Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending Justice, and protecting the American People,” Trump wrote.
Patel, a vocal critic of the FBI and proponent of the “deep state” theory alleging anti-Trump bias within government agencies, has frequently supported Trump’s narrative of bureaucratic opposition.
Patel, the son of Indian immigrants, previously served as a national security advisor and chief of staff to the acting defense secretary during Trump’s first term.
“Kash did an incredible job during my First Term,” Trump added, praising his ally’s commitment to fighting crime, dismantling migrant gangs, and combatting drug trafficking.
If confirmed, Patel would replace Christopher Wray, who was appointed FBI director by Trump in 2017 for a 10-year term.
Wray has overseen several high-profile investigations involving Trump, including the search of his Mar-a-Lago estate in 2022 for classified documents.
Trump has consistently criticized Wray and the FBI, particularly over its investigations into the January 6 Capitol riot and alleged ties between Trump’s campaign and Russia.
In a statement to CNN, the FBI emphasized that Wray remains focused on supporting the agency’s mission and personnel.
Separately, Trump announced Chad Chronister, a Florida sheriff, as his nominee for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
On Truth Social, Trump lauded Chronister’s commitment to securing the border and combating the fentanyl crisis.
“Chad will work with our great Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to secure the Border, stop the flow of Fentanyl, and other Illegal Drugs, across the Southern Border, and SAVE LIVES,” he wrote.
Bondi, a longtime Trump ally and former Florida attorney general, is the president-elect’s pick to lead the Department of Justice.
These nominations underscore Trump’s intent to appoint loyalists who align with his policy goals.
The FBI and DEA, both part of the Department of Justice, play critical roles in federal law enforcement.
Trump’s choices signal a broader reshaping of the department to align with his vision.
