The Nigerian military has intensified its offensive against terrorism, achieving a significant breakthrough in Zamfara State. Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, in collaboration with the air component, carried out coordinated clearance operations across the Shinkafi, Kagara, Fakai, Moriki, Maiwa, and Chindo axis on January 17.
A statement by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed that scores of terrorists were neutralized during the operation, including the son of notorious terror kingpin Bello Turji. The operation also led to the destruction of terrorist hideouts, particularly on the Fakai high ground, where Turji’s forces had been entrenched.
“The terrorist leader, Bello Turji, in a gross cowardly act, escaped, abandoning his son and combatants,” the statement read.
News of the raid and the death of Turji’s son quickly spread on social media, particularly within the Arewa community on X (formerly Twitter), with many users expressing excitement. Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the development on his verified X account, adding that Turji is currently on the run.
The military operation also resulted in the rescue of several hostages who had been held captive by Turji’s group. According to the statement, the troops dealt a significant blow to the terrorists’ logistical network, further crippling their operations.
In a related operation, the military destroyed another camp belonging to a terrorist leader known as Idi Mallam in the Zango Kagara Forest. Three terrorists were neutralized, three suspected collaborators were arrested, and a cache of weapons was recovered, including two machine guns, one AK-47 rifle, and ammunition. The troops also rescued 61 rustled cattle and 44 sheep.
“The troops remain committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all citizens across the country,” the statement concluded, emphasizing the ongoing resolve of the Nigerian Armed Forces to eliminate terrorist threats.
