Troops from Operation Safe Haven have apprehended five notorious gunrunners and seized a significant cache of arms and ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation in Plateau State.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by Major Stephen Zhakom, the Military Public Information Officer for Operation Safe Haven, this action aligns with their core mandate of eliminating illegal arms and ammunition in the Joint Operations Area.
The operation, which began at midnight on September 16 and concluded in the early hours of September 17, 2024, targeted the hideout of a gunrunner identified as Mohammed Sani.
The raid took place at the Naraguta Mining Area in Bayameni, along Bauchi Road in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
During the operation, Sani and four others were arrested.
The troops recovered a substantial cache of weapons and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles, one Fabrique Nationale automatic rifle, 14 AK-47 magazines, and one Fabrique Nationale magazine.
They also seized 5,316 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, 98 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO), and 43 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Major Zhakom stated that the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation to gather useful intelligence that could lead to the arrest of other syndicate members and help dismantle the gun-running supply chain.
