President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressed profound sadness over the passing of retired Supreme Court Justice Uthman Muhammad Argungu, describing his death as a significant loss to both the nation and himself personally.
Justice Argungu, who passed away at the age of 90, was laid to rest on Sunday in Argungu, Kebbi State, following Islamic funeral rites.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the late jurist for his integrity, dedication, and lifelong commitment to serving both humanity and Nigeria.
“Justice Uthman Argungu was not only a towering figure in Nigeria’s judiciary but also a respected mentor and friend.
His enduring commitment to justice and public service will continue to inspire generations to come,” the statement read.
Justice Argungu’s illustrious career began as a teacher in the old Sokoto Province before he was called to the bar in 1965.
He went on to achieve prominence in the judiciary, eventually being appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993.
His influence extended beyond Nigeria, as he also served as a visiting justice on the Supreme Court of the Gambia.
President Tinubu recalled Justice Argungu’s immense contributions to national development and the shaping of Nigeria’s legal landscape.
“His contributions to the judiciary have left an indelible mark on our nation.
We have lost a statesman of extraordinary caliber,” the president said.
The president also offered prayers for Justice Argungu’s soul and extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, the government, and the people of Kebbi State.
He assured them of the nation’s support during this difficult time.
