The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, is to lead a federal delegation to Jigawa through the directives of President Bola Tinubu in response to a tragic fire in Majia town on Tuesday night.
The tragic incident claimed over 100 lives. The delegation’s visit aims to assess the situation on the ground and offer support to the affected community.
The delegation includes the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Alkali; Corps Marshal of the Federal Roads Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Shehu Mohammed; and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North West), Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed that the delegation will visit the scene of the incident to assess the damage and also visit those injured in the hospital.
President Tinubu has also ordered that emergency relief, including medical supplies, food, and shelter, be provided to the 50 victims currently receiving treatment and others impacted by the fire.
“The President, with a heavy heart, joins the Vice President in extending his deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this devastating incident,” the statement read.
“He expresses his heartfelt prayers and support to the government and people of Jigawa during this time of tragic loss and grief.
He prays for divine comfort for the bereaved families and peaceful repose for the souls of the departed,” the statement continued.
Onanuga further revealed that Tinubu has reassured the nation of the Federal Government’s commitment to a swift review of fuel transportation safety protocols, in partnership with state governments to prevent such disasters in the future.
The President has instructed the FRSC to strengthen safety measures, particularly during night travel, including increased patrols and stricter enforcement of regulations.
Tinubu also vowed that those responsible for any safety breaches leading to the tragedy will be held accountable, reaffirming the government’s resolve to ensure such incidents do not happen again.
