President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, officially commissioned the Afam II Power Plant in Rivers State, marking what he described as a “significant milestone” in Nigeria’s quest for energy security and sustainable development.
The newly inaugurated 180-megawatt power facility, completed in just 16 months, stands as a testament to what President Tinubu called “the enterprising Nigerian spirit.”
“Today is a good day for Nigeria,” he declared. “The completion of Afam II is proof of what we can achieve through collaboration, tenacity, and great commitment.”
Tinubu praised the Rivers State Government and private sector partners—notably Sahara Power Group, First Independent Power Limited, and Crescendo Nigeria Limited—for their vital roles in delivering the project.
Highlighting the plant’s value, the President noted that the power generated would support homes, businesses, industries, and hospitals, helping to “illuminate the path toward a better Nigeria.”
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to achieving a stable, reliable power supply, describing electricity as “the lifeblood and vessel of industrialisation.” Tinubu revealed he had tasked the Minister of Power, NiMet, and other stakeholders to work in synergy to “light up Nigeria.”
“We assure Nigerians of our dedication to global best practices in the power sector and welcome continued support from international partners, including the United States,” he added.
The President ended on a hopeful note, calling for national unity and support for ongoing reforms, before formally declaring the plant open:
“To the glory of God, I have the pleasure to declare Afam II power plant commissioned today, June 4, 2025.”
With its 180MW capacity, the Afam II plant is expected to make a significant contribution to the national grid, bolstering supply reliability and powering Nigeria’s broader industrial and economic aspirations.
