President Bola Tinubu has approved N108 billion for the 36 states to combat flooding and other natural disasters. This was disclosed on Wednesday by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a meeting at the State House in Abuja with Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen.
Vice President Shettima described the situation in Maiduguri, where floods have caused widespread devastation, as a national calamity.
He highlighted the President’s commitment to partnering with state governments to address such challenges.
“The President has shown his zeal, willingness, and commitment to partner with the states towards addressing these issues,” Shettima said.
He further noted that Tinubu had recently approved N3 billion for each state to tackle these pressing issues.
“The President wants all parts of the federation to have a sense of belonging,” Shettima added.
Shettima also praised Speaker Tajudeen’s leadership in the National Assembly, acknowledging the stability he has provided despite nearly 70% of members being newly sworn in.
“There is a lot of stability in the House of Representatives, and we commend you for your leadership.
You are one of the fulcrums of our democratic journey,” Shettima stated.
He stressed the importance of a harmonious relationship among the executive, legislature, and judiciary to sustain democracy in Nigeria.
In response, Speaker Tajudeen expressed solidarity with the people of Borno State, extending condolences to both Shettima and President Tinubu.
He assured that the National Assembly would support communities affected by flooding and natural disasters.
“We share your pains and concerns.
We are committed to working with you to provide all necessary support and palliatives to help affected individuals regain their livelihoods,” Tajudeen said.
The financial assistance is part of the federal government’s broader strategy to tackle the growing challenges posed by climate-related disasters and ensure nationwide recovery efforts.
