President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi as the Acting Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

This follows the retirement of Haliru Nababa, who completed his tenure as the Controller-General after serving for three years and seven months.

Nababa, appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, officially concludes his tenure on December 15, 2024. A colorful pulling-out ceremony was held on Friday to honor his service and achievements.

A statement signed by Ahmed Ja’afaru, Secretary of the Board of Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services, confirmed that Ndidi’s appointment takes effect on December 15, 2024. Born on November 26, 1966, Ndidi hails from Oguta in Imo State and previously served as the Deputy Controller-General in charge of Training and Staff Development.

He is a fellow of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and holds the national honor of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR).

At the retirement ceremony, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, praised Nababa’s leadership, describing his tenure as transformative in reforming, rehabilitating, and reintegrating inmates into society.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Minister commended Nababa for advancing the service’s core mandate and wished him a fulfilling retirement on behalf of President Tinubu.

In his valedictory address, Nababa reflected on his journey, which began in 1990 when he joined the Nigerian Prisons Service.

He highlighted accomplishments in areas such as security, staff capacity building, healthcare, and inmates’ welfare, crediting his success to the unwavering support of his team.

With Ndidi’s appointment, the Nigerian Correctional Service is poised to continue its reforms and address emerging challenges in the sector.
