Chinese eCommerce platform Temu has surged to the top of Nigeria’s app download charts, becoming the most downloaded app on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store. With over 500 million downloads on the Android platform alone, Temu has cemented its status as a dominant force in the Nigerian digital landscape.
According to analytics firm SimilarWeb, payment platform OPay ranks as the second most popular app in Nigeria, followed by Crypto Mayors and WhatsApp on Google Play Store.
On the Apple App Store, Temu retains its top spot, with social networking app Bammby in second place and OPay in third.
Temu’s meteoric rise is attributed to a massive advertising blitz. The company reportedly spent $1.3 billion on Meta ads between January and November 2023, representing a staggering 1,000% increase in ad spend year-over-year. Of this, 76% was allocated to social media campaigns, while 13% targeted other platforms.
Additionally, Temu secured high-profile advertising slots during two consecutive Super Bowl seasons, spending $7 million per 30-second ad and distributing $15 million in coupons.
Founded in 2022 by PDD Holdings, the parent company of Chinese eCommerce giant Pinduoduo, Temu has rapidly expanded into 80 markets worldwide.
PDD Holdings, led by former Google employee Colin Huang, has built its reputation on offering low-cost products shipped directly from suppliers.
Temu’s competitive pricing has been particularly appealing in Nigeria, where inflation and economic challenges have significantly reduced purchasing power.
In Nigeria, a key African market, Temu benefits from a large population of tech-savvy youth and widespread adoption of affordable Chinese smartphones.
The country’s eCommerce sector, valued at $12 billion in 2019, is projected to grow to $75 billion by 2025, spurred by the increasing adoption of secure digital payment systems.
This rapid expansion poses a serious challenge to existing players like Jumia, which has scaled back its marketing efforts to focus on profitability.
While Temu’s entry is reshaping Nigeria’s eCommerce landscape, questions about the platform’s service quality persist.
As Nigeria’s digital market continues to grow, the competition between Temu and local rivals is expected to intensify, shaping the future of eCommerce in the region.
