The suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, has been remanded at the Ilaro Correctional Centre in Ogun State after failing to meet his bail conditions.
The spokesperson for the correctional facility, Yinka Odukoya, confirmed the development to “PUNCH Online” on Wednesday, stating that the monarch remains in custody until his bail is perfected.
“Yes, he is in our custody, which means he has been unable to meet the bail conditions granted by the court yesterday.
However, as soon as he does, he will be released,” Odukoya said.
Ogunjobi was arraigned by the Ogun State Police Command on Tuesday over a viral video showing him assaulting a 73-year-old man, Abraham Areola.
According to the charge sheet (MH2b8c/2025), the suspended monarch was accused of “conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.”
The court, presided over by Magistrate F. A. Iroko, granted him bail with two sureties, each required to provide N5 million and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
The case was adjourned to March 6 for a hearing.
The widely circulated video showed Ogunjobi verbally and physically assaulting Areola, forcing him to kneel on the road while berating him with curses and accusations of conspiracy against him and his family.
At one point, one of the monarch’s aides slapped the elderly man and ordered him to prostrate before Ogunjobi, who allegedly boasted about his connections in law enforcement and threatened to have Areola jailed.
The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Ogun State has commended the state government for swiftly suspending Ogunjobi.
In a statement on Tuesday, the coalition’s chairman, Comrade Solomon Bankole, “condemned the assault and called for full prosecution of the monarch.”
Similarly, the Ogun State Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) praised the government and police for ensuring justice for the victim.
The PCRC Chairman, Samson Kunle Popoola, also urged law enforcement to “arrest the individual who slapped Areola” in the viral footage, assuring the public of the committee’s commitment to upholding fundamental human rights in Ogun State.
