The Super Eagles have officially secured their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a game to spare in the qualifiers. This comes after a surprising result in Group D, where Libya, positioned at the bottom, defeated Rwanda 1-0 in Kigali. The result ensures Nigeria’s qualification, as Rwanda now trails the Super Eagles by five points with only one game left, making it impossible to surpass Nigeria’s points tally.
Rwanda’s loss means they will remain behind Nigeria even if they manage to win in the next match between the two sides in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, scheduled for Monday. Nigeria’s position at the top of Group D is further solidified by their recent 1-1 draw against Benin Republic, which ensures they will finish as group leaders.
“FT in Abidjan. Benin 1–1 Nigeria | See you in Morocco and thank you all for your support #SoarSuperEagles,” tweeted the official Super Eagles account on November 14.
With one game remaining, Nigeria currently leads Group D with 11 points from five matches, trailed by Benin Republic with seven points and Rwanda with five. Libya, with four points, remains at the bottom of the group standings.
For Benin Republic to advance, they must secure a win against Libya in their final match. Alternatively, they will need Nigeria to defeat Rwanda, while Benin avoids a loss.
The Super Eagles will enter the upcoming AFCON with high expectations after finishing as runners-up in the last tournament, where they were narrowly defeated by hosts Côte d’Ivoire.
Notably, star striker Victor Osimhen made headlines by scoring his 23rd goal for the Super Eagles in Thursday’s game, bringing him level with Segun Odegbami in Nigeria’s all-time top scorer rankings. The team celebrated the achievement, tweeting, “V I C T O R O S I M H E N 🔥🔥🔥 @victorosimhen9 23 goals for the Super Eagles, now joint 2nd All Time Top Scorer with the legendary @Mathematical7.”
The Super Eagles are now looking forward to the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, with fans and supporters rallying behind their promising squad.
