Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, was briefly detained by the Nigerian Immigration Service upon his arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday.
Sowore, who had been in the United States with his family, returned on a flight from Washington Dulles International Airport, which took off at 6:14 AM EDT and landed in Lagos at 9:43 AM WAT.
His arrival coincided with a gathering of members of the Take It Back Movement and other activists who had assembled at the airport in anticipation of his return.
Upon landing, Sowore was detained by immigration officials who also seized his passport.
According to the activist, no explanation was provided for his detainment, though officials mentioned they were following instructions from higher authorities and needed to contact Abuja for further direction.
Shortly after, Sowore was released, and his passport was returned to him.
He confirmed the incident through a post on his X handle, where he noted that the detention had been brief.
The brief detainment has raised concerns among supporters, given Sowore’s past activism and his frequent clashes with the government.
However, no further details have been provided regarding the reasons behind the immigration service’s actions.
