A member of the House of Representatives representing Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency in Sokoto State, Abdussamad Dasuki, has declared that he will not contest for re-election in the 2027 general elections, citing the need to open political space for younger Nigerians.

Dasuki, who made the announcement in a statement obtained on Sunday, described his decision as a personal sacrifice aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and promoting youth inclusion in governance.

The lawmaker, who began his political career in 2011, has held various positions, including serving in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, the State Executive Council, and the National Assembly.

He currently leads the Future Is Now Project, a youth inclusion initiative launched in October 2025. The project advocates that by 2027, at least 70 per cent of seats in the House of Representatives should be occupied by Nigerians under the age of 40.

Explaining his decision, Dasuki said his withdrawal from the race aligns with his long-standing campaign for generational renewal in politics. Although he still identifies as a youth, he noted that he has surpassed the 40-year age mark set by his initiative and therefore must lead by example.

According to him, “If we must give real meaning to our advocacy for youth representation, leaders must be willing to make sacrifices. My decision not to seek re-election is part of that commitment.”

Reflecting on his 14-year journey in public service, Dasuki expressed gratitude to his constituents and political mentor, former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, for their support and guidance throughout his political career.

He urged Nigerian youths to seize the opportunity to take leadership roles, emphasizing that the future of the nation depends on their courage, integrity, and vision.

Dasuki added that stepping aside from elective office would not end his contribution to national development, as he intends to continue working in mentorship, policy advocacy, and youth empowerment.

He concluded by stating that his decision represents a new model of leadership — one that knows when to step aside to allow a new generation to take charge of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
