A fire has destroyed property worth millions of naira at a spare parts market in the Idumota area of Lagos State.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that the fire broke out on Friday night.
Oke-Osanyintolu revealed that an initial investigation indicated that several buildings, which housed shops selling car spare parts, were consumed by the fire.
The statement detailed, “Following distress calls to the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency Lines at 10:20 p.m., the LASEMA Emergency Response Teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, were promptly activated.”
Upon arrival at the scene at 10:55 p.m., LASEMA Response Teams discovered multiple buildings engulfed in flames.
“While the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined at the time of this report, it is confirmed that goods and properties worth hundreds of millions of naira were destroyed by the blaze,” the statement continued.
The response efforts involved the LASEMA Shark Response Team, LASEMA Fire Unit, LASEMA Tiger Response Team, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Federal Fire Service. Their coordinated efforts successfully prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures.
Law enforcement agencies also implemented crowd control measures to ensure the safety of those at the scene.
Oke-Osanyintolu added that fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported, and that “dampening down” operations were underway to eliminate the remaining flames. Efforts to salvage valuable items from the affected shops are ongoing.
He assured that work is continuing to fully extinguish the fire, and recovery operations remain in progress.
